BACKGROUND
The inspiration behind Start Seeds was sparked by our respect for Rick Rubin. Rick Rubin is a legend in the music industry. He co-founded Def Jam Recordings and shaped the landscape of hip hop by producing for artists like Run-DMC and LL Cool J. His book, The Creative Act: A Way of Being, is a book every person should pick up at some point. Seriously. He is a master of creativity. In Rick’s opinion, creativity has a place in everyone's life, and that place needs to be nourished and cultivated.

There’s a specific chapter in The Creative Act entitled “Seeds,” and this chapter sparked the idea to build a project around this theme. Seeds are ideas. Seeds are moments of inspiration. Seeds are visions. They are planted with the desire to cultivate something beautiful and of value to others. According to Rubin, this is the first phase of the creative process. You cannot grow the plant without the planting of the seed. The seed phase applies to everything in life. For a business, a seed could be a problem your community is dealing with. For a song, it could be a phrase or melody. No matter how the specifics of it look, this phase is optimized when approached with active awareness and boundless curiosity. Being open to possibility gets you to an end result you may not have even known you wanted to get to.

In this same Seeds chapter, Rubin notes that when a gardener plants seeds, they must also create optimal conditions to foster growth. Seeds need things such as healthy soil, water, and sunlight in order to thrive. And similarly to a plant, you can’t grow your seeds in suboptimal conditions.
